Can the Toilet Pipes Be Moved?
The toilet pipes can be moved, but the modification methods and restrictions vary for different parts of the pipes.

Water supply pipes: They are relatively easy to relocate. Water supply pipes are usually installed inside the walls or above the ground in one's own home. When modifying them, the main considerations are the pipe routing, connection methods, and coordination with other facilities. Since their positions are mainly within one's own living space, they generally do not affect the downstairs neighbors, so there are relatively few restrictions on modifications.
Drain pipes:
- Overall situation: They are difficult to move. Drain pipes are often located on the ceiling of the downstairs neighbors' units. Modifying them may damage the bathroom's waterproof layer, causing water leakage in the downstairs area. If the drain pipes are moved to above one's own floor slab, although it can avoid damaging the downstairs waterproof layer, it may affect the aesthetics and require proper waterproofing treatment again. Otherwise, water leakage may occur in one's own bathroom.
- Toilet pipes: Modifications should be made with extreme caution. Generally, it is best to keep them in their original positions. If it is really necessary to move the toilet, a toilet offset connector can be used for small-scale adjustments. The moving distance usually should not exceed 15 centimeters (there is also a view that it can be within a short distance of 40 centimeters), and right-angle bends should be avoided as much as possible because they increase the drainage resistance and are prone to clogging. If a complete change of the toilet position is required, a new hole needs to be drilled in the floor. In this case, it is necessary to consult with the downstairs neighbors to confirm whether it is feasible to drill the hole. If conditions permit, a hole with a diameter of 150mm can be drilled using a water drill, and then new pipes can be laid and connected to the original toilet drain pipe. This process involves modifying the floor slab structure, so construction safety must be ensured to avoid damaging the building structure.
- Sink pipes: Modifications are relatively flexible, and they can be changed to wall-mounted drainage. Wall-mounted drainage hides the pipes inside the wall, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also saves space. However, after changing to wall-mounted drainage, a strainer with a filter screen must be installed to effectively intercept hair, debris, etc., and prevent pipe clogging. The filter screen should be cleaned regularly to ensure smooth drainage.
- Floor drain pipes: They can be moved a short distance, and the moving distance generally should not exceed 30 centimeters. If a new floor drain needs to be added, special care should be taken during the operation. It is best to consider whether it can be shared with other pipes to reduce construction difficulty and cost. During the moving process, the “30 - 5 - 2” principle must be followed.
The modification of toilet drain pipes involves the stability of the drainage system and the safety of the building structure. Before making any modifications, it is advisable to consult professional plumbers or decoration companies to ensure that the construction plan is reasonable and feasible.
