Can the Toilet Be Relocated and Renovated?

Admin October 05, 2026

The toilet can be relocated and renovated, but it must be done carefully based on factors such as drainage method and relocation distance, while adhering to relevant regulations.

I. Toilet Relocation Methods and Applicable Scenarios

  1. Same-Floor Drainage (Sunken Bathroom)
The pipes can be freely adjusted. Simply extend or shorten the pipes to complete the relocation without damaging the floor slab structure, offering high flexibility in modifications.

  2. Inter-Floor Drainage (Drainage Pipe Through Floor Slab)

    • Adding a Relocation Device: Suitable for small-scale relocations of 10-40 centimeters. The floor must be chiseled to embed a flat pipe, with a slope greater than 3% and a 5-centimeter drop in the pipe. If the relocation exceeds 1 meter, the risk of blockage significantly increases. It is recommended to use a channel-type relocation device and carry out construction after tiling. Since the floor slab cannot be excavated, it needs to be raised, and the relocation distance is not recommended to exceed 2 meters.
    • Raising the Floor: Suitable for large-distance relocations (e.g., exceeding 1 meter). The floor must be raised by 12-20 centimeters to form a slope to prevent blockage, but this may affect the safety of the elderly and children and requires redoing the waterproof layer.
    • Changing from Floor Drainage to Wall Drainage: Connect the toilet to the adjacent wall of the sewage riser, not to the opposite wall. After modification, the drainage is smoother, applicable to both same-floor and inter-floor drainage, but requires building a false wall and can be combined with storage design.
    • Modifying the Sewage Pipe in the Neighbor's Home: If the neighbor agrees, it can reduce construction difficulty, but coordination is often challenging in practice.

II. Suggestions for Toilet Orientation Adjustment

  1. Toilet in the North or Northeast Orientation: Can be relocated as a whole or the toilet fixture can be adjusted to improve feng shui layout.
  2. Toilet in the Southwest Orientation: It is recommended to move it towards the northwest to optimize spatial energy flow.
  3. Toilet in the West Orientation: The layout should be retained or optimized based on specific conditions, avoiding blind modifications.
  4. Toilet in the South Orientation: Priority should be given to relocating it to the east, southeast, or northwest to enhance living comfort.

III. Key Considerations

  1. Construction Safety: Before modification, confirm the load-bearing capacity of the building structure to avoid damaging key components such as beams and columns.
  2. Waterproofing: After relocation, reapply waterproof coating and conduct a closed-water test (at least 24 hours) to ensure no leakage.
  3. Ventilation Optimization: After renovation, maintain ventilation by installing an exhaust fan or adding windows to prevent moisture and odor accumulation.
  4. Compliance: When modifying public pipes, report to the property management or relevant departments in advance to avoid illegal construction.
