Can the Toilet Be Moved During Home Renovation?

Admin October 10, 2026

The toilet can be moved during home renovation, but it requires a comprehensive assessment based on legal regulations, technical conditions, and specific needs.

Legal Regulations: According to the 'Residential Design Code' GB 50096-2011, bathrooms should not be directly located above the bedrooms, living rooms (halls), kitchens, or dining rooms of lower-level occupants to avoid affecting their daily lives. Additionally, the 'Measures for the Administration of Interior Decoration and Renovation of Residential Buildings' explicitly prohibits converting rooms or balconies without waterproofing requirements into bathrooms. Violating these regulations may result in fines ranging from 500 yuan to 10,000 yuan and require rework and rectification. Therefore, before moving the toilet, it is necessary to verify the layout of the apartment to ensure that the new location complies with the above regulations and does not involve illegal renovations.

Technical Feasibility:

  1. Sewage System Modification: Toilets and other sanitary fixtures need to be connected to sewage pipes with a diameter of 110mm, and a slope (usually ≥2%) must be ensured to prevent blockages. If flat pipes are used for relocation or the floor is raised, inadequate slope may lead to poor drainage or even odors; raising the floor may also make the bathroom higher than other areas, posing a risk of water accumulation and backflow.
  2. Waterproofing: The new area requires a new waterproof layer with a height of at least 1.8 meters, and the number of coats must meet the standard (usually 2-3 times); otherwise, leakage problems may occur.
  3. Water Supply and Drainage Pipe Planning: If the pipe layout is unreasonable, it may generate water flow noise; improper sealing at the floor penetration points may also cause condensation water to drip, which needs to be reduced through sound insulation materials and sealing treatments.

Specific Methods for Toilet Relocation:

  • Short-Distance Relocation (10-15 cm): Use a toilet offset connector, which is cost-effective and easy to install, but attention must be paid to the pipe slope; sunken bathrooms are easier to modify. Relocation distances exceeding 15 cm or multiple bends increase the risk of blockages.
  • Raising the Floor: If relocation exceeds 15 cm, a new raised platform can be built to bury the pipes, with a minimum diameter of 110mm and a slope of 2%-3%, but this sacrifices ceiling height.
  • Floor Drain to Wall Drain Conversion: The pipes run along the wall without raising the floor, suitable for relocations of more than 50 cm; the modified toilet is less likely to block, but a false wall needs to be built.
  • Modifying Pipes Downstairs: Requires the consent of neighbors and a new waterproofing test, making the operation more difficult.
  • Sunken Bathroom: Pipes can be directly modified within the backfill layer, offering greater flexibility.

Other Considerations: From a Feng Shui perspective, bathrooms belong to the water element, and relocating them requires consideration of the new location's relationship with the five elements in the home (such as the wealth position and the Wen Chang position). If the original location conforms to the Feng Shui layout, relocating it may disrupt the energy field, affecting health and fortune; if relocation is necessary, it is advisable to consult a professional Feng Shui master first and ensure proper moisture and odor control measures are taken.
