Can a Couple Live in a Container House?

Admin September 17, 2026

A couple can live in a container house, but there are many inconveniences and challenges. However, through reasonable renovation, it can also meet living needs.

Inconveniences and Challenges of Living

  • Limited Space: Some container houses have relatively small areas. For example, a 24-square-meter container house where a 33-year-old couple and their 6-year-old son live is very inconvenient. The cramped space affects the conduct of daily activities, and the living space for the couple is also crowded, lacking sufficient privacy.
  • Incomplete Facilities: Many container houses lack basic living facilities. For instance, the 35-year-old couple, Xiao Fei and his wife, live in a 72-square-meter house made from containers, which has no bathroom or kitchen. This causes great difficulties in daily life, as basic needs such as washing up, cooking, and using the toilet are hard to meet conveniently.
  • Poor Sound Insulation and Heating: Container houses generally have poor sound insulation. A 35-year-old couple in Shanghai lives in a 72-square-meter container house with no sound insulation. They are disturbed by external noise in daily life, and it also affects their privacy. Moreover, some container houses have no heating, resulting in poor heating performance in cold seasons and low living comfort.
  • Inconvenient Water and Electricity Use: There may be problems with the water and electricity supply and installation, affecting normal life. Some container houses may not have a complete water and electricity supply system, or they are prone to malfunctions during use, causing many inconveniences for the couple.

Meeting Needs After Renovation

Despite these problems, some couples have transformed container houses into fully functional homes through long-term renovation. For example, a couple spent six years renovating two old, 30-square-meter containers into a house that can accommodate seven people and integrates functions such as cooking, bathing, and sleeping. Through reasonable planning and design, installing necessary living facilities, and carrying out sound insulation and heating treatments, container houses can also meet the living needs of couples and provide a warm and comfortable home. However, renovating a container house requires a certain investment of time, effort, and funds.
