Usage Guide for Camping Portable Toilets
Admin October 22, 2026
The usage methods for camping portable toilets vary depending on the type. Here are the specific operating steps and precautions for common types:

Portable Toilets
- Installation: Place the toilet on a flat surface and secure the base. Some models have buckles that allow you to separate the black water tank (used for collecting waste) by pressing them. Confirm the buckle location and operation method in advance.
- Usage: Open the toilet lid directly for use. If the model supports adding water, pour an appropriate amount of clean water (usually 3-5 liters) into the water tank. After use, press the flush button to use the water flow to rinse the inner walls and reduce residue.
- Cleaning: After use, press the buckle to remove the black water tank, pour the waste into a dedicated septic tank or designated disposal area. If in the wild without a septic tank, wrap the black water tank in a plastic bag and seal it before discarding it to avoid direct contact with the environment. After cleaning, rinse the black water tank with clean water and let it dry for future use.
Disposable Emergency Bags
- Usage: Directly discharge waste into the bag. The gel-like chemicals pre-placed in the bag will quickly solidify the liquid and absorb odors.
- Disposal: Immediately seal the bag opening after use to ensure no leakage. Take the sealed bag as ordinary garbage away from the campsite and discard it at a public garbage collection point or designated trash can. It is strictly prohibited to discard it randomly in the natural environment.
Simple Pit Toilets
- Site Selection: Choose a location away from water sources (at least 60 meters), the campsite, and trails. Select an area with loose soil and good drainage, avoiding low-lying or easily waterlogged areas.
- Digging the Pit: Use a shovel to dig a shallow pit about 15-20 centimeters deep and 30 centimeters wide. The depth should be sufficient to cover the waste and reduce odor diffusion.
- Usage and Covering: After using the toilet, mix the waste with the soil in the pit, completely cover it with surrounding soil, and compact it. You can cover the surface with leaves or dead grass for further concealment. Strictly adhere to the 'Leave No Trace' camping principle to ensure no residual traces remain.
Small Folding Toilets
- Installation: Unfold the metal or plastic frame to form a toilet seat. Place a collection bag (such as a disposable emergency bag or thick garbage bag) underneath, ensuring the bag edges completely wrap around the bottom of the frame to prevent leakage.
- Usage: Sit directly on the toilet seat to use the toilet, and the waste will fall into the collection bag.
- Cleaning: After use, seal the collection bag and take it as ordinary garbage away from the campsite. If using a biodegradable bag, you can bury it according to the method for 'simple pit toilets', but confirm that the bag material meets environmental protection requirements.
General Precautions
- Installation and Site Selection: All types of toilets should be installed on flat ground and at a location away from water sources (at least 60 meters). Tent-style toilets need to have their supports firmly fixed to prevent tipping.
- Hygiene Management: It is recommended to clean your hands with hand sanitizer before and after use to avoid cross-contamination. Chemical toilets should have deodorizing agents added according to the instructions, and the collection bags or black water tanks should be replaced or cleaned regularly.
- Environmental Protection Requirements: Biodegradable materials should be buried deep in the soil (at least 15 centimeters) after use. Chemical waste liquids or ordinary garbage must be packed and taken away from the wild. It is prohibited to dump them into natural water bodies or soil.
