Cambodia Container Renovation House

Admin September 15, 2026

The following design ideas and experiences can be referred to for container renovation houses in Cambodia:

Space Utilization and Functional Integration

The core of container renovation lies in breaking through the limitations of the original structure and achieving maximum functionality through flexible space design. For example, in one case, two 30㎡ containers are arranged in an L-shape. The side of one container is used to design an electric hydraulic deck, which, when extended, forms a patio area, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces. The interior furniture adopts foldable designs, such as wall-mounted bed boards and collapsible tables and chairs, which free up activity space during the day and meet the needs of multiple people staying at night. Some cases even use custom-made transformable beds (such as sofa beds and folding beds) to accommodate 2-4 people in a 15㎡ space.

Environmental Adaptation and Comfort Enhancement

Given the metal properties of containers (high thermal conductivity and poor sound insulation), it is essential to focus on optimizing thermal insulation and ventilation systems. For example:

  • Material Selection: Use artificial boards with thermal insulation materials instead of solid wood to avoid cracking and deformation while reducing costs;
  • Roof Design: Adopt an A-frame roof structure or metal plate sunshade devices to reduce heat transfer and introduce natural light through translucent roofs;
  • Ventilation System: Promote air circulation through openable doors and windows, wire mesh glass walls, or **top vents. Some cases install solar panels to meet electricity needs.

Modular and Personalized Design

The standardized dimensions of containers (such as 20 feet and 40 feet) facilitate modular combination and can be expanded according to needs. For example:

  • Vertical Expansion: Hang additional modules on top of containers to form a second-floor bedroom or patio;
  • Horizontal Connection: Connect multiple containers to divide public areas (living room, kitchen) from private spaces (bedroom, bathroom);
  • Style Integration: Design the exterior in harmony with the surrounding environment. For example, containers in forests adopt natural wood-colored interiors, while those in wilderness areas retain the industrial feel of containers and add artistic elements through corrugated board walls and vintage lamps.

Cost and Sustainability

Container renovation offers significant low-cost advantages. Some cases have a total cost of only 110,000 RMB, covering basic decoration, furniture, and equipment. In terms of material selection, priority is given to using recycled wood, steel, and other environmentally friendly materials, combined with solar panels and rainwater collection systems to reduce long-term operating costs. Additionally, the modular construction method shortens the construction period and reduces the environmental impact of on-site construction, aligning with sustainable building trends.
