Cabinet Clan Residential Container House
The 'Cabinet Clan' residential container house is a temporary or transitional living space transformed from shipping containers to cope with the pressure of high housing prices. It primarily serves low-income groups and features low cost and flexibility, but it also has issues such as limited space and restricted legality.

Origin and Background
Around 2010, as housing prices in Chinese cities soared, low-income groups (such as construction site workers, lower-class citizens, and impoverished college students) faced housing difficulties. The concept of residential containers was thus introduced and gradually became popular. The phenomenon of 'container蜗居族' (container-dwelling groups) reported by the media reflected the urgent need of this group for low-cost housing solutions.
House Characteristics
- Space and Structure: The common dimensions are 3 meters wide, 10 meters long, and 2 meters high, with an internal area of approximately 18 square meters. It is usually equipped with 4 double-decker bunk beds, accommodating 8 people. Some customized container houses (such as the athletes' dormitories for the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games) adopt a two-bedroom and one-living-room layout, equipped with independent bathrooms, refrigerators, washing machines, and other facilities. However, they have low ceiling heights and narrow bed spacing, resulting in a cramped living experience.
- Facility Configuration: The basic configuration includes windows for natural light, electrical wires, and socket panels. Some are equipped with air conditioners, exhaust fans, and simple lighting. High-end customized versions may feature all-wooden decorations, but due to the original structure of the containers, the space utilization rate remains relatively low.
Distribution and Legality
Since they are not included in the government-approved housing system, the 'Cabinet Clan' mostly concentrates in remote suburbs, under overpasses, or beside construction sites to avoid supervision. Such communities exist in Shenzhen, Fuzhou, Suzhou, Zhejiang, and other places, reflecting their nationwide spread.
Cost Advantages
The rent is extremely low, approximately 6 yuan per day or less than 1.5 yuan per person per day, significantly lower than the cost of traditional housing, which is the core reason for its selection by low-income groups.
Application Expansion and Challenges
- Diversified Scenarios: In addition to residential use, container modifications are gradually being applied in office and commercial fields and have become temporary accommodation solutions for international sports events (such as the Asian Games). However, the practice of the Nagoya Asian Games shows that container houses still have obvious shortcomings in terms of spatial comfort and facility completeness.
- Anti-corrosion Treatment Technology: To extend their service life, container houses generally adopt hot-dip galvanizing or coating methods for anti-corrosion. Hot-dip galvanizing has strong durability but requires strict control of the pickling and cleaning processes. The coating method has a low cost, but the outdoor maintenance cost is relatively high, requiring regular re-coating.
Rental Considerations
When choosing, it is necessary to focus on examining the material quality: the thickness of the channel steel determines the number of stacking layers and structural stability, and the wall sandwich steel plates need to have fire prevention, waterproofing, anti-leakage, and sealing properties. Poor-quality materials may lead to safety hazards, and the use of recycled materials or non-standard components should be avoided.
