Bus Stop Portable Toilet

Admin September 27, 2026

Bus stop portable toilets are facilities set up to address the lack of basic service facilities at bus stops, especially the difficulty faced by drivers in finding restrooms.

The Necessity of Installing Portable Toilets at Bus Stops

The supporting facilities at bus stops are often not uniformly planned, facing difficulties in water and electricity connection, drainage, and restroom access. Drivers frequently have to use the restrooms of nearby shops and other social units on a paid basis, but this comes with numerous issues, such as late opening hours, early closing hours, long distances, long round-trip times, few toilet stalls, and high foot traffic. Some drivers, in order to depart on time, have to reduce their water intake, hold their urine, or wear diapers. Long-term urine retention not only leads to diseases among drivers but also causes them to be mentally tense, irritable, and unable to concentrate on driving, posing potential safety hazards.

Measures Taken by Relevant Departments

  • Planning and Construction: The "Urban Public Toilet Increment and Quality Improvement (2021-2022) Implementation Plan" has been formulated and issued, focusing on areas with high foot traffic and urgent public needs, such as bus stops and park squares, to plan for the addition of new public toilets. The planning and layout of public toilets around bus stops have been strengthened, and new-technology public toilets have been promoted. Relevant departments are guided to include public toilet construction in the planning and construction of bus stops.
  • Open Sharing: Social units are actively encouraged to open their restrooms to bus drivers.
  • Management and Maintenance: The maintenance, renovation, and daily operation management of public toilets around bus stops have been strengthened to improve toilet service levels. For example, at the bus departure station on Huanglong Road North Section in Yubei District, in response to the practical problems faced by bus drivers, such as the long distance and time-consuming round trips to nearby social unit restrooms, the existing bus dispatch room has been expanded, and additional toilets and stalls have been installed, taking into account urban appearance, environmental sanitation, and safety. Signs for social unit restrooms and public toilets near bus stops have been added to improve guidance.

Composition and Classification of Portable Toilets

Portable toilets generally consist of fecal sewage storage tanks (or fecal sewage treatment devices), floor slabs, sanitary ware, walls, washing equipment, water tanks, roofs, and mobile devices. They can be classified into single-structure portable toilets and composite-structure portable toilets based on their structural form; into hoisting and handling portable toilets, powered and towed portable toilets based on their mobility; and into water-flush and waterless suction portable toilets, circulating water-flush portable toilets, and dry-packing portable toilets based on their sewage treatment method. They have the advantages of being movable, combinable, and easy to transport.
