Bus Converted to Mobile Toilet

Admin September 23, 2026

A bus can be converted into a mobile toilet, and the conversion process mainly includes four steps: space planning, structural modification, facility installation, and decoration, all of which need to comply with relevant standards and offer high economic and social benefits.

I. Conversion Process

  1. Space Planning: Based on the internal dimensions of the bus, precisely plan the toilet area, including the toilet zone, hand-washing zone, and storage zone. The main toilet area should retain at least a 1.5m x 2m space to ensure normal operation and passage for a single person. The hand-washing area should utilize the remaining space to set up a sink, mirror, and small storage cabinet.
  2. Structural Modification: Remove the original seats and interior decorations from the bus, and carry out sound insulation and waterproofing treatments on the vehicle body. Install a waterproof layer at the bottom of the vehicle to prevent sewage overflow; open ventilation holes on the side or rear of the vehicle to ensure air circulation and reduce odors.
  3. Facility Installation: Install toilets, water tanks, hand-washing basins, piping systems, etc. Choose water-saving toilets, and configure the water tank capacity reasonably according to the number of users, with a single-use water volume controlled between 3 - 5L. The piping system should use corrosion-resistant and easy-to-clean materials, such as PVC or stainless steel. The hand-washing basin can be an integrated or split type, equipped with a hot and cold water supply system.
  4. Decoration: Lay non-slip floor tiles on the ground, choose waterproof wallpaper or tiles for the walls, and install lighting fixtures and exhaust fans on the ceiling. The interior style should be simple and easy to clean, ensuring a comfortable and easy-to-maintain sanitary environment.

II. Relevant Standards and Safety During the conversion process, it is necessary to strictly comply with national and local standards regarding sanitary facilities and vehicle modifications. The toilet drainage should meet environmental protection requirements, and the vehicle's driving safety should pass the inspection by the vehicle management department. At the same time, attention should be paid to safety issues such as waterproofing, anti-electric leakage, and anti-slip to ensure safety during use.

III. Economic and Social Benefits The conversion cost varies depending on factors such as the vehicle's condition, facility configuration, and decoration level. The basic conversion cost ranges from 100,000 to 200,000 yuan, while high-end conversions may exceed 300,000 yuan. However, compared to building new fixed toilets, it has lower costs, faster deployment, and can be reused, offering high economic and social benefits. For example, during the May Day holiday in 2026, the Jinci Scenic Area in Shanxi used converted buses as mobile men's toilets, increasing the daily average reception capacity of the toilets.
