Beijing Waterless Mobile Environmental Toilet

Admin October 09, 2026

The Beijing waterless mobile environmental toilet is an eco-friendly sanitation facility that employs feces-urine separation technology to achieve resource recycling without relying on traditional sewer networks.

Technical Principles and Treatment Methods: It features a built-in separation device that collects urine and feces separately into different containers. The solid portion is treated with sawdust and other materials through aerobic composting, transforming it into organic fertilizer. The urine, after storage and fermentation, converts nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other elements into forms directly absorbable by plants. Currently, the mainstream waterless or low-water flushing technologies include vacuum suction and biodegradation. The vacuum suction system collects waste through negative pressure, consuming only about one-tenth of the water used by traditional flush toilets per flush. The biodegradation method decomposes organic waste into carbon dioxide, water, and a small amount of residue by adding specific microbial agents under controlled temperature and oxygen conditions.

Advantages and Characteristics:

  • Convenience: Its modular design allows for quick assembly and disassembly, adapting to various scenarios. The internal ventilation system effectively controls odors, and some models are equipped with solar panels for off-grid operation.
  • Environmental Benefits: Each use saves approximately 6-8 liters of tap water and prevents corresponding sewage generation. The compost output can be used for soil improvement in non-edible plants.
  • Hygiene and Safety: High-temperature composting inactivates most pathogens, and antimicrobial materials are used on contact surfaces with regular cleaning and maintenance.

Practical Limitations: Users need to change their toilet habits; the compost output requires a standardized collection, transportation, and testing system. Microbial decomposition efficiency varies under different climatic conditions, with low temperatures in northern winters affecting microbial activity. Some models are equipped with insulation layers or auxiliary heating devices. In dry climates, ventilation and humidity control parameters need adjustment.

Significance for Urban Infrastructure: It provides a decentralized treatment solution, reducing pressure on municipal sewer network construction, expanding the service range of sanitation facilities, promoting updates in urban sanitation system design concepts, and facilitating the practice of decentralized treatment solutions based on circular economy principles.
