Barrier-Free Toilet for Disabled People

Admin September 24, 2026

A barrier-free toilet for disabled people, also known as an accessible restroom or accessible toilet cubicle, is a specialized facility designed for special groups, serving wheelchair users, visually impaired individuals, and the elderly.

Core Design Requirements

  1. Space Dimensions
    • It must meet the turning requirements of wheelchairs. The net dimensions of toilet cubicles in new and renovated projects should be no less than 1.80m×1.50m, with the diameter of the wheelchair turning area being ≥1.50m and the standard area being no less than 4 square meters.
    • The floor plan layout includes four typical types: Type A (360° wheelchair rotation), Type B/C (used in reverse), and Type D (sliding door to optimize space) to adapt to different scenarios.
  2. Door Design
    • The clear width for passage after the door is opened should be ≥800mm. Outward-opening doors are preferred; if inward-opening doors are used, space for wheelchair turning should be reserved.
    • A horizontal grab bar should be installed on the outer side of the door (at a height of 900mm), and a door-closing handle and emergency latch should be installed on the inner side to ensure safety and convenience in use.
  3. Safety Grab Bars
    • The length of the horizontal grab bar should be ≥700mm, and it should be 250mm - 350mm above the top edge of the toilet seat. The side near the wheelchair can be rotatable.
    • The horizontal length of the L-shaped grab bar is the same as that of the horizontal grab bar. The vertical part is 150mm - 250mm in front of the toilet seat, and the top is 1.40m - 1.60m above the ground, providing multi-angle support.
  4. Supporting Facilities
    • Toilet Seat: The height should be 400mm - 450mm, and the flushing device should be operable with one hand or be automatic.
    • Toilet Paper Dispenser: It should be 150mm - 450mm above the top edge of the toilet seat for easy access in a sitting position.
    • Emergency Call Device: It should be installed 400mm - 500mm above the ground and support triggering in a fallen state.
    • Low-Position Washbasin: A knee space of 650mm should be reserved at the bottom for the convenience of wheelchair users.
    • Urinal: It should be equipped with a vertical grab bar and a horizontal auxiliary bar with a height of ≤400mm.

Policies and Standards

  • At the national level, China has clearly required through the General Code for Accessibility in Buildings and Municipal Engineering (GB 55019 - 2021) that at least one accessible toilet cubicle should be set on each floor of public buildings.
  • At the local level, Guangzhou plans to require that the area of accessible toilets in public buildings be no less than 4.00 square meters and that emergency call devices be installed by 2025. In 2026, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region will promote the full coverage of accessible toilet cubicles in expressway service areas. During the process of creating a national healthy town, Changgang Town, Suizhou County, Hubei Province plans to focus on making up for shortcomings in people's livelihoods such as accessible facilities in public toilets.
