Are Urban Houses Prefabricated?

Admin September 18, 2026

Urban houses are generally not constructed using prefabricated slab structures nowadays. Here is a detailed introduction:

Current Status of Traditional Prefabricated Slab Houses

In the past, prefabricated slab houses were relatively common in some older residential areas. Prefabricated slabs were a commonly used component in early construction, pre-made in factories and then transported to construction sites for installation and assembly, forming parts of the house's floor structure. However, as time passed, these types of houses gradually revealed numerous issues. Due to the gaps between prefabricated slabs, cracking can easily occur after prolonged use and environmental impact. Moreover, houses with prefabricated slab structures have poor overall integrity and perform poorly in terms of earthquake resistance, making them prone to collapse during natural disasters like earthquakes, posing significant safety hazards. For these reasons, traditional prefabricated slab houses have gradually been phased out, and such houses are now rare in urban areas.

Mainstream Structures of Modern Urban Houses

Currently, urban housing construction primarily adopts safer and more robust structural forms such as full-frame structures. A full-frame structure consists of beams and columns that form a framework to bear loads, providing good overall integrity, strong earthquake resistance, and stability. This structure better meets the requirements of modern architecture for safety and durability, offering residents more reliable living security.

Prefabricated Houses in Prefabricated Construction

Although there is a form of prefabricated house known as prefabricated construction, it differs from traditional prefabricated slab buildings. Prefabricated construction involves breaking down a house into multiple components, such as wall panels, floor slabs, and stairs, which are prefabricated in factories and then transported to construction sites for assembly. This construction method offers advantages such as fast construction speed, controllable quality, and environmental friendliness. However, prefabricated construction is not currently the mainstream method for urban housing construction, as there are still areas that need further improvement and development in terms of technology, cost, and market acceptance.
