What is the Appropriate Size for a Container House

Admin September 15, 2026

The appropriate size of a container house should be determined comprehensively based on the usage scenario, number of occupants, and functional requirements. The common standard size is 6 meters in length × 3 meters in width × 2.8 meters in height, suitable for construction site dormitories, temporary offices, and other scenarios; custom sizes can be adjusted flexibly according to specific needs.

I. Common Standard Sizes and Applicable Scenarios

  1. 3 meters × 3 meters × 2.8 meters

    • With an area of approximately 9 square meters, the space is compact and suitable for 2 people to live in or as a construction site guard room or small warehouse.
    • Advantages: High material utilization rate and low cost; Disadvantages: Limited living comfort and only meets basic functional requirements.
  2. 6 meters × 3 meters × 2.8 meters

    • With an area of approximately 18 square meters, it is the most common standard size on construction sites, capable of accommodating about 10 people to live in or being transformed into facilities such as kitchens and toilets.
    • Advantages: Moderate space, strong functional expandability, and convenient lifting and transportation; Disadvantages: If independent rooms need to be separated, additional design is required.
  3. 7 meters × 3 meters × 2.8 meters

    • With an area of approximately 21 square meters, it is usually used for two-story container mobile homes, adding corridors and awnings, suitable for multi-person dormitories or office scenarios.
    • Advantages: High space utilization rate and smooth traffic flow; Disadvantages: Sufficient space needs to be reserved for splicing.

II. Flexibility of Custom Sizes

  • Non-standard sizes: Adjust the length, width, and height according to needs (such as 3 meters × 8 meters, 3 meters × 12 meters), or change the width (2.5 meters/4 meters) and height (2.6 meters/2.9 meters).
  • Special requirements: If doors, windows, partitions, or personalized decorations need to be added, a custom plan should be negotiated with the manufacturer.
  • Application scenarios: Temporary exhibition halls, medical and epidemic prevention stations, mobile shops, and other scenarios with specific space requirements.

III. Selection Suggestions

  1. Number of occupants: A single person or a couple can choose a 20-foot container (about 14 square meters); a small family is recommended to choose a 40-foot container (about 28 square meters).
  2. Functional requirements: For office scenarios, space for desks and meeting areas should be reserved; for living scenarios, bed positions, storage, and ventilation design should be considered.
  3. Transportation and installation: Standard sizes are easier to pass through narrow passages, and for custom sizes, transportation routes and lifting plans should be planned in advance.
  4. Budget control: Standard sizes have lower costs, while custom sizes have large price fluctuations due to differences in materials and craftsmanship (the price range of a 6-meter living container is 6000-18000 yuan).

IV. Precautions

  • Confirm whether the materials of the wall panels and floors are moisture-proof and heat-insulating to avoid increasing later maintenance costs.
  • When renting a container, clarify the rent, deposit, and damage compensation terms (for example, the rent for a packing container with a curtain wall is 2 yuan more per day).
  • Prioritize choosing manufacturers with mature craftsmanship and strong technology to ensure structural safety and service life.
