Size Regulations for Mobile Toilets in Apartments

Admin October 08, 2026

The size regulations for mobile toilets in apartments should be determined based on the specific configuration type and functional requirements. Common standards are as follows:

I. Basic Configuration Size Requirements

  1. Single-unit Configuration: Suitable for single-room mobile toilets that only need to meet basic excretion functions, the minimum area required is 1.1 square meters. This standard can accommodate a standard toilet and necessary operating space, but care should be taken to avoid inconvenience caused by too small a distance between the sanitary fixtures and the walls.
  2. Two-piece Configuration (Bathtub + Toilet Combination): It is recommended that the area be no less than 2.5 square meters. This configuration needs to meet both bathing and excretion functions simultaneously, requiring reasonable planning of the layout of the bathtub and toilet to avoid water splashing outside or conflicting movement paths.
  3. Three-piece Configuration (Sink + Bathtub/Shower + Toilet Combination): The total area required should be no less than 3 square meters. This configuration needs to take into account three major functions: washing, bathing, and excretion. It should optimize space utilization through L-shaped or U-shaped layouts while reserving areas for separating wet and dry zones.

II. Special Scenario Size Requirements

  1. Accessible Toilet Stalls: To meet the needs of wheelchair rotation, the net size should be at least 1.8 meters by 1.5 meters, and a 1.5-meter square wheelchair rotation area should be reserved. The door width should be ≥ 80 centimeters (preferably using outward-opening or electric doors), and auxiliary facilities such as handrails and emergency call devices should be installed inside.
  2. Family/Universal Restrooms (for public or family multi-purpose use): The area should preferably be no less than 6.5 square meters. It needs to accommodate adult toilets, children's toilets, baby changing stations, accessible facilities, etc., simultaneously. The spatial layout should comply with the specifications in the "Urban Public Toilet Design Standard" (CJJ 14-2016) regarding multi-generational shared use.

III. Comfort Recommended Standards

To enhance the user experience, it is recommended that the total area of mobile toilets in apartments be controlled between 5 and 10 square meters. This range can avoid interference between sanitary fixtures, for example:

  • 5 square meters can achieve a three-piece configuration + a small storage cabinet;
  • 8-10 square meters can expand to include double sinks, smart toilets, or independent shower stalls, etc., as upgraded configurations.
    In actual design, adjustments should be made based on the apartment's layout, ventilation conditions, and user needs. For example, longitudinal layouts can optimize movement paths in narrow spaces, while central symmetric designs can enhance the sense of space in square areas.

IV. Compliance Considerations

All size designs should comply with the mandatory provisions in the "Urban Public Toilet Design Standard" (CJJ 14-2016) regarding minimum usable area, equipment spacing, ventilation, and lighting. For example, a minimum operating space of ≥ 0.45 meters should be reserved on both sides of the toilet, and a minimum passage width of ≥ 0.7 meters should be retained in front of the sink. If renovating old apartments, the building's load-bearing capacity, drainage pipe diameter, and other basic conditions should be checked in advance to ensure the feasibility of size adjustments.
