American Purchase of Chinese Container Houses
The United States does indeed purchase container houses manufactured in China, primarily due to cost advantages and challenges in domestic construction in the US, with significant market growth observed.

Purchase Cases and House Characteristics
American consumers directly purchase container houses made in China through cross-border e-commerce platforms (such as Alibaba, TEMU, and Alibaba International Station). For example, American couple Mr. and Mrs. Fuke and Xueer purchased an expandable container house for less than 200,000 RMB (including transportation and tariffs); bloggers Shelly and her husband ordered a 40-foot foldable house with a total landed cost of approximately $29,000, including hard furnishings such as a bedroom, kitchen, and independent bathroom, ready for occupancy upon connecting to water and electricity. These houses adopt a modular design, are prefabricated in factories, and transported in standard container forms. Upon arrival at their destination, they are assembled and expanded through splicing, offering a practical area of up to 70 square meters and are equipped with comprehensive facilities.
Reasons for Purchase
1. Significant Cost Advantages
The comprehensive cost of prefabricated houses in China is only one-third to half of that of domestic construction in the US. The cost of building a single-family home in the US is approximately $165 per square foot, with labor costs alone reaching $200,000 for a house of the same size, and the overall construction period lasting from six months to a year. In contrast, the total landed cost of a Chinese container house is less than $30,000 (approximately 200,000 RMB), with a significantly shorter construction period.
2. Challenges in Domestic Construction in the US
The US construction industry faces a severe labor shortage, requiring an additional 349,000 workers by 2026 to meet demand. The retirement of older skilled workers, reluctance of young people to enter the industry, and tightened immigration policies have led to high labor costs and extended construction periods. Additionally, tariff policies have increased the cost of building a standard home in the US by approximately $10,900, further weakening the competitiveness of domestic construction.
Market Growth
In the first half of 2026, the transaction volume of mobile prefabricated housing on Alibaba International Station increased by 50% year-on-year, with the US becoming the largest buyer market, accounting for more than 20% of overseas orders. During the same period, China's integrated housing exports reached $2.324 billion, a year-on-year increase of 47.9%. Modular housing has become a new growth point for Chinese manufacturing going global. This trend indicates that Chinese container houses, with their cost-effectiveness and supply chain advantages, are gradually penetrating the US market.
