American Container-Built Houses

Admin September 15, 2026

It is feasible to build houses using containers in the United States, and a certain scale of market application has been formed.

Construction Methods and Characteristics

Container houses are constructed using a modular approach. The factory disassembles the entire building into several independent space units and completes over 80% of the processes, including the main structure, interior decoration, and installation of mechanical and electrical pipelines, in the workshop. The houses are then transported across the ocean in independent modules packed into containers. Upon arrival at the site, they are directly assembled, requiring only a small amount of work such as module connection and water and electricity connection before they can be put into use, with almost no need for additional large-scale construction. For example, the "building block houses" produced by China Construction Steel Structure Jiangsu Co., Ltd. for the North American market feature well-organized kitchen and bathroom layouts and exquisite living room decorations, meeting the standards of finished and decorated residential houses on the market.

Significant Advantages

  • Environmentally Friendly and Low-Carbon: The on-site assembly stage does not generate large-scale noise or construction waste, meeting the stringent requirements of the North American market for green construction.
  • Quality Control: Factory operations allow most processes to be completed in the workshop, significantly improving the precision of product quality control and freeing workers from the harsh environment of outdoor high-altitude operations.
  • Outstanding Efficiency: Taking an 18-story high-rise residential project in Hong Kong as an example, the traditional construction method would take 3 to 5 years, while the modular construction solution completed delivery within one year, shortening the overall construction period by 60% to 70%.
  • Lower Cost: The average construction cost of houses of the same specifications in the United States is about $165 per square foot, with a construction period of 6 to 18 months, and labor costs alone reaching about $200,000. In contrast, the comprehensive cost of prefabricated houses in China is only one-third to half of that of local construction. For example, the 40-foot folding house purchased by American bloggers Shelly and her husband had a total landed cost of $28,689, approximately 70 square meters with two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and an independent bathroom, with all hard decorations pre-installed.

High Market Acceptance

China's prefabricated building exports increased from $1.472 billion in 2015 to $4.339 billion in 2025, nearly tripling in a decade, with a growth rate of 45% in the first quarter of 2026 alone. The United States is China's largest buyer market for prefabricated houses, accounting for more than 20% of overseas orders.
