Sizes of Portable Houses and Containers

Admin September 16, 2026

The sizes of portable houses and containers are diverse, with common specifications categorized into universal standard sizes, commonly used domestic sizes, and other common sizes.

Universal standard sizes primarily reference international standard container specifications:

  • 20-foot Standard Container (20GP): External dimensions are 6.058m (length) × 2.438m (width) × 2.591m (height), with internal dimensions of 5.898m × 2.352m × 2.393m, and a volume of approximately 33 cubic meters. These containers are suitable for short-distance transportation or small temporary building needs.
  • 40-foot Standard Container (40GP): External dimensions are 12.192m × 2.438m × 2.591m, with internal dimensions of 12.032m × 2.352m × 2.393m, and a volume of approximately 67 cubic meters. Their length is doubled, making them suitable for scenarios requiring more space, such as temporary office areas or warehousing.
  • 40-foot High Cube Container (40HC/HQ): External dimensions are 12.192m × 2.438m × 2.896m, with internal dimensions of 12.032m × 2.352m × 2.698m, and a volume of approximately 76 cubic meters. The height is increased by 0.3 meters, allowing for more shelves or equipment, commonly used in scenarios with high vertical space requirements.

Commonly used domestic sizes are more tailored to local needs:

  • 6m long, 3m wide, 2.9m high: With an area of approximately 18 square meters, this is a universal specification for container-style portable houses, suitable for construction site dormitories, temporary shops, etc.
  • 3m square small standard container: With an area of approximately 9 square meters, it is compact and easy to deploy quickly, commonly used for guardhouses, tool rooms, or temporary warehouses.
  • 7m long, 3m wide: These container houses are often used for two-story assembled houses or office areas with corridors, allowing for expanded usable area through combination to meet complex functional needs.

Other common sizes balance flexibility and practicality:

  • 3m × 6m × 2.8m: With a moderate area and height, it supports vertical and horizontal assembly to form larger spaces, suitable for temporary exhibition halls, conference rooms, etc.
  • Customized Special Sizes: Such as widened containers with widths extended to 2.8-3.2 meters, requiring oversized transportation. These customized containers can meet special equipment installation or personnel passage needs, but transportation costs are higher.

When choosing container sizes, it is necessary to comprehensively consider transportation restrictions, usage scenarios, and functional requirements. Universal standard sizes facilitate international transportation and modular assembly, commonly used domestic sizes are more adapted to localized scenarios, while customized sizes can solve special needs.
