Dimensions of 36-Square-Meter Container Houses

Admin September 17, 2026

There are several common dimension designs for 36-square-meter container houses:

Single-Story Rectangular Design

The most common 36-square-meter container house adopts a single-story rectangular structure, with typical dimensions of 4 meters in width and 9 meters in length. This design is achieved through the lateral expansion of a single standard container: the standard container has a width of 2.438 meters, and if two containers are placed side by side (total width of 4.876 meters), the net width can be adjusted to 4 meters by optimizing wall thickness or reducing the gap between containers; in the length direction, it can be achieved by connecting three standard containers (each 6 meters long) or customizing a 9-meter-long container. This design offers high space utilization, making it suitable for office and residential scenarios, and has strong structural stability.

Double-Story Vertical Design

Another option is a double-story vertical structure, with dimensions of 3 meters in width, 6 meters in length, and 2 stories, achieving a total area of 36 square meters through vertical space stacking. Each floor has an area of 18 square meters (3×6), connected by stairs. This design is suitable for areas with limited land resources, effectively separating functional areas (e.g., living upstairs and working downstairs). However, it requires consideration of floor height (usually not less than 2.5 meters per floor) and the safety of the load-bearing structure, necessitating additional frame reinforcement.

Extended Combination Design

An extended design based on a 40-foot standard container (40GP) can also achieve a 36-square-meter space. A single 40GP container measures 12.192 meters in length and 2.438 meters in width, with an indoor area of approximately 28 square meters; if two containers are placed side by side, the width expands to 4.876 meters, with the length remaining at 12 meters. By removing some partition walls or adding附属 structures (ancillary structures) such as balconies, the area can be further optimized to 36 square meters. This design requires attention to waterproofing and insulation at the connection points and has higher transportation costs.

Design Selection Recommendations:

  • For those seeking spaciousness, the single-story 4×9-meter design is preferred;
  • For functional zoning or land conservation, the double-story 3×6×2-story structure is more suitable;
  • The extended design is ideal for scenarios requiring high modular flexibility, but transportation and assembly plans should be planned in advance.
